Irvin's Tinware began in 1960 when craftsman and designer Irvin Hoover, then just sixteen years old and known locally for building birdhouses, was asked by a local merchant to recreate an antique punched-tin lantern. Using an old stovepipe, Irvin handcrafted his very first lantern—marking the beginning of what would become Irvin's Tinware.

The photograph captures a milestone in those early days: Irvin's first large production run of handcrafted lanterns, ready for delivery to his first major customer. Demand for his unique designs grew quickly, leading him to expand his handcrafted tinware collection and open Irvin's Craft Shop, which would eventually become today's Irvin's Tinware.
